About Mad As

Desperately worried about their families’ future, Mad As formed from families with children at schools in the affected areas in October 2006. Initially two mums realized that despite their hopes that common sense would prevail, filtration would NOT be installed in the Lane Cove Tunnel. These mums (called Elizabeth and Jackie) thought they would hold a local public meeting to try and get the community and themselves better informed about the issue. After this meeting, further concerned residents and parents joined Mad As. Initially a committee of 6 people started planning the activities of Mad As with two main objectives:

  1. To get as many local residents as possible informed about the dangers of unfiltered tunnel pollution from the two exhaust stacks.
  2. To get as much media coverage on the issue as possible.

From there, a leaflet drop to 15,000 residents was achieved by 35 volunteers from the group in November 2006. The leaflet is available on the website and informs the local community that the tunnel will not be filtered and that the health impacts from this could be very dangerous. A large public meeting was held in Ryde on the 6th December 2006 where over 150 people heard about the potential health issues, especially for children, those with cancer and those prone to lung and heart disease. That night, the group appeared on Channel 9 news and were also heard on ABC 702 and 2GB with Alan Jones. Many more members were enlisted to fight for filtration. In December 2006, the group had a committee of 10 people and a membership of over 430 people. You can contact the Mad As committee via the Contact Us page.

The two objectives of Mad As will hopefully culminate in a change of heart from the State Labor Government. In an election year in 2007, it is hoped that the voice of the people will be heard and filtration will be installed. If not, then the people of NSW have a right to vote on this issue. At this stage, both the Liberal party and the Greens have promised all Sydney Tunnels will be filtered. Many high impact events are planned for the next few months leading up to the election.

MAD AS WILL NOT GIVE UP!

FIGHT FOR FILTRATION NOW!
